Well, A Freshman's Adventure for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux has a release date!
That's right, everyone! A Freshman's Adventure has been ported into Unity, the entirety of Chapter 1! All of this was possible by basically creating my own language, called "Brina" which is extremely similar to the batch command line language used for the original game. Brina, is a bit unfinished at the moment. There are still a lot of commands missing, most notably, the "else" statement, and a few things don't quite work as expected. However, it still runs great with A Freshman's Adventure, and it was way easier than just, recreating the entire game from the ground-up. Some of you may call that lazy, but you know what they say... Work smarter, not harder!
I plan to improve the Brina language more, and maybe make a web version of it, so anyone can use it to easily create the text-based game of their dreams, on any platform imaginable! This will literally be the next Twine, or err... Maybe not, but it's still cool to imagine!
And now... For the release date... This port will be releasing on December 17th, 2021!
That's right, and you can download it on the same itch.io page i've been using to host the downloads of the original version!
Unfortunately, however... There are a few drawbacks I had to make...
No visual or sound effects
Well, not to say I didn't include any visual effects at all, when you or an enemy get a "KAPOWIE!!!" attack, the screen will flash yellow twice, indicating that the attack must've been really critical! However... There are still no sound effects or other visual effects. First of all, I didn't have the time or the money to hire an artist to make good-looking backgrounds and sound effects. I know I could've just made them myself, but first of all, i'm not really good at drawing, or sound design for the matter... Second of all, I really wanted to make this game as accessible on many platforms as possible, as fast as possible. The original game didn't have any visual or sound effects at all, and some people still enjoyed it. And third of all, I kind of felt it would distract from the game itself, but now that I think about it, that sounds kinda stupid...
I'm sorry if I disappointed anyone by making this announcement. Maybe someday I'll add visual and sound effects either in the full game, or as a free update to the demo, but I just don't have the time right now...
No blind support/built in screenreader
I'm really sorry, I know this game is mostly played by blind players using a screenreader, but all of the text-to-speech plugins I could find costed a lot of money, which is pretty much the only reason there's no blind support. If any of you know of any free plugins, please let me know. Otherwise, if I feel it's worth it, I'll be willing to spend money for a text-to-speech plugin!
The original command-line version is still available to download, however, now named as "Legacy CMD Edition" which has good blind support!
Off with the disappointing stuff, here are more screenshots!
